The question of what constitutes legitimate modes of inquiry has always been of concern to educational researchers looking for new ways to conceptualize issues. A relatively recent form of inquiry, arts-based educational research includes the following forms of representation: multi-media, poetry, narrative, fictive narrative, drama, comedy, reader's theatre, collage, quilting, painting, sculpture, photography, music/song and dance, and film and video (Norum, 1999). Shared by arts-based researchers is the belief that traditional models of inquiry have failed to satisfyingly address the "socially complex, variable-rich, and context-specific character of education" (Labaree, 2003, p. 14); in contrast, the arts promise the opportunity "to increase the variety of questions that we can ask about the educational situations we study" (Eisner, 1997. p. 8). One form of arts-based inquiry that is becoming increasingly recognized for its influence on the way individuals and communities think about and act in the world, is film. Giroux (2003) argues that though it is tempting to categorize Hollywood films in particular as superficial treatments of complex issues, these films should be understood as powerful educational tools for shaping individual identity and public consciousness:
